The Federal Government, in collaboration with UN Women, has launched Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) initiatives aimed at supporting women entrepreneurs across Nigeria. Ambassador Gabriel Aduda, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, announced this partnership during a meeting with UN Women in Abuja. He emphasized the hurdles faced by women entrepreneurs, such as limited access to funds and complicated procurement processes.
Aduda stressed the importance of prioritizing Women’s Economic Empowerment, noting its role in unlocking their potential and enhancing their contribution to nation-building while preventing marginalization. The Affirmative Procurement Project, he explained, aims to address these challenges by giving preference to women in procurement activities, thus strengthening their economic standing and boosting their contributions to both family welfare and the national GDP.
To ensure smooth implementation, Aduda disclosed the formation of a National Steering Committee. He mentioned that Kaduna and Lagos States have already piloted Gender Responsive Procurement Policies and are awaiting gubernatorial approval for full-scale implementation.
Aduda also announced plans for a National Policy Dialogue to raise awareness among stakeholders and the public about the benefits of Gender Responsive Procurement for economic growth. Zephania Aura, Acting Deputy Country Representative of UN Women, praised the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs for creating a conducive environment for women’s economic progress. He reiterated UN Women’s dedication to Women’s Economic Empowerment as a vital avenue for fostering female entrepreneurship in Nigeria.
