TECNO, a leading technology innovator, has announced a new partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Nigeria to support the implementation of the Nigeria Learning Passport, a digital learning platform.
The challenge of providing education remains significant, with many children either out of school or not learning effectively. In Nigeria, these educational challenges are particularly severe. To address this, the Federal Ministry of Education and UNICEF launched the Nigeria Learning Passport programme in 2022. This initiative is part of UNICEF’s global educational strategy, known as the Learning Passport, which began in 2018.
The Nigeria Learning Passport offers curriculum-aligned materials in local languages through a mix of online and offline formats. This approach enables children to access educational resources anytime and from any location. The platform provides comprehensive educational content ranging from basic learning to skill development and includes professional training for educators.
This partnership will help extend the reach of the Nigeria Learning Passport, particularly to children in remote and underserved regions. The programme, which is now operational in 19 states and ranks second among participating countries with approximately 888,000 registered users, aims to broaden its impact. TECNO’s collaboration with UNICEF will enhance content development, facilitate the purchase and maintenance of technical equipment, and support professional training for educators.
In 2024, UNICEF plans to expand the Nigeria Learning Passport to provide offline content for 50,000 children in remote and low-income areas, further bridging the educational gap and enhancing the quality of education.
Cristian Munduate, UNICEF Country Representative in Nigeria, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “We are delighted to collaborate with TECNO to amplify the reach and effectiveness of the Nigeria Learning Passport. This partnership will enable us to offer quality education to more children, especially in remote and underserved areas. Digital learning is a key tool in addressing educational disparities and ensuring that every child has the chance to learn and succeed. With TECNO’s support, we are closer to making education accessible to all Nigerian children and helping them build a brighter future.”
Jack Guo, General Manager of TECNO, noted, “As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, TECNO is committed to giving back to the communities where we operate. Investing in education is a powerful way to break the cycle of poverty and contribute to social and economic development. Africa has the world’s youngest population, and progress for African children represents progress for the world. Through the Learning Passport programme, we aim to provide young people in Nigeria with the educational opportunities they need to drive economic growth and social advancement, not just in Africa but globally.”
According to a report from the APO Group on behalf of TECNO Mobile, by the end of 2023, the Learning Passport programme had expanded to 38 countries, with a total of 6.02 million registered users and over 13,000 available courses. The programme was recognized in 2020 as one of the 50 Most Influential Projects by The Project Management Institute and named one of TIME’s 100 best inventions of 2021.
