Deadline: 31st May,2024
The U.S. Embassy in Abuja has announced an open competition for organizations to submit proposals for projects under the Ambassador’s Special Self-Help (ASSH) Small Grants Program.
Program Goals:
The ASSH program is aimed at providing small-scale grants for community development activities that enhance living conditions. It is designed to be flexible, allowing the Ambassador to respond directly to community requests for assistance with projects that have immediate impact and align with Mission priorities. The program encourages communities to become self-reliant and undertake similar activities independently in the future. The U.S. contribution will be a fixed amount provided on a one-time basis.
Project Objectives:
- Economic diversification and job creation: Projects should generate sustainable revenue and employment opportunities in local communities, focusing on economic diversification and promoting entrepreneurship, including initiatives led by women.
- Social inclusion and services: Projects should aim to improve the lives of vulnerable populations, including people with disabilities, ethnic minorities, the elderly, and female heads of households. This includes improving access to basic services such as water and sanitation.
- Youth and child development: Projects should create opportunities for youth, including employment, and enhance access to early childhood and primary education.
- Environment and community-based natural resource management: Projects should promote community ownership and management of natural resources, conservation efforts, resilience building, and adaptation to environmental changes.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Projects must improve basic economic or social conditions on a small community scale and have long-term value.
- They should have high impact, benefiting a significant number of community members with a high beneficiary-to-budget ratio.
- Projects must be initiated by the community and demonstrate strong community involvement.
- A community contribution of 10% or more of the total project cost is required, which can be in cash or in-kind.
- Projects should aim to be completed within 6-12 months and be self-sustaining upon completion.
- Proposals must come from non-governmental, not-for-profit organizations registered on the federal or state level in Nigeria.
- Preference will be given to established local grassroots groups based within the communities where projects are implemented.
Ineligible Activities:
- Projects related to partisan political activity or personal expenses for individuals.
- Funding for private businesses or the purchase and setup of surveillance equipment.
- Duplication of other U.S. Government programs.
