Annually, the Digital Energy Challenge for startups recognizes 5 to 8 innovative digital projects targeting energy access and grid services improvement in Africa. The competition is open to startups and public utility companies across Africa, including both North and Sub-Saharan regions.
For 2024, the Challenge focuses on three thematic areas:
- Universal electricity access and mini-grids
- Efficient grid management
- Resilience and decarbonization of power systems
Winning startups receive:
- Financial support of up to €150K, alongside technical assistance
- Participation in a joint boot camp led by experts from various sectors
- Widespread communication campaigns managed by AFD for project visibility
Startups must meet these eligibility criteria:
- Founded less than 10 years ago
- In the pre-seed/early-stage financing phase (less than €1M funding raised)
- Annual turnover below €1M
- Employing between 1 and 99 full-time staff
NGOs can apply under the Start-up category if the project meets one of the additional following criteria:
- The project is set up as a company as a branch of the NGO
- The project has a dedicated team and business plan, and targets business sustainability/profitability (e.g. plans to spin off as an independent entity).
NGOs can apply under the startup category if their project meets additional criteria related to company setup, dedicated team, business plan, and innovation.
