The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has reiterated its commitment to advancing tax policy development and enhancing the capabilities of tax administrators across West Africa. This was emphasized by the agency’s chairman, Zacch Adedeji, during the opening session of the West African Tax Administration Forum (WATAF) Country Correspondents’ Conference, which took place at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja on Tuesday.
Adedeji stressed that a well-structured tax policy is a fundamental pillar of economic development, as it strengthens domestic revenue mobilization and ensures long-term national growth. He explained that efficient tax administration directly benefits both governments and their citizens by generating the necessary resources for public services, infrastructure development, and social programs.
In a statement released by his media adviser, Dare Adekanmbi, it was noted that Nigeria has consistently played a key role in international tax cooperation and regional partnerships. Adedeji pointed out that the country has remained an active supporter of WATAF by providing technical assistance and capacity-building programs for member states. He underscored Nigeria’s commitment to fostering regional collaboration to tackle shared challenges in tax administration.
“Nigeria has always taken a leadership role in advancing regional tax cooperation, understanding that collective action is essential in addressing common obstacles. Through our ongoing support for WATAF, we have contributed to shaping policies that strengthen tax systems across West Africa,” he remarked.
He further encouraged conference participants to actively engage in discussions, expand their professional networks, and apply the insights gained to enhance their respective tax systems. According to him, modern tax administration requires continuous adaptation to global best practices and a proactive approach to emerging challenges.
Adedeji also praised WATAF for establishing a platform that facilitates collaboration among tax administrators in West Africa. He emphasized that by working together, countries in the region could boost revenue collection, minimize dependence on external financial support, and drive sustainable economic progress.
The WATAF Country Correspondents’ Conference remains a crucial gathering for tax administrators within the sub-region, providing a forum for sharing experiences, analyzing emerging challenges, and formulating strategies to enhance tax collection and policy implementation.
