The Nigerian Government has announced a strategic collaboration with Google, aimed at establishing Nigeria as a global technology hub. This initiative follows a meeting in Paris between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, where they discussed advancing Nigeria’s role in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital innovation.
Kashifu Inuwa, Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), spoke about the importance of this partnership during a recent interview on Arise TV. He explained that the collaboration would result in the creation of a comprehensive roadmap for Nigeria’s digital transformation. The roadmap will focus on critical areas, including the expansion of AI, development of digital skills, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Inuwa highlighted that integrating AI across various sectors is expected to significantly improve efficiency and productivity, which will, in turn, boost the national economy. Additionally, he mentioned that part of the collaboration involves initiatives to train millions of Nigerians in digital skills, ensuring that the workforce is equipped to meet the evolving demands of the tech industry.
This partnership builds on previous collaborations between NITDA and Google, such as the Google Hustle Academy Bootcamp, which offered free online training to SMEs to enhance their business operations and revenue generation. These initiatives are in line with NITDA’s mission to create self-sustaining ecosystems that accelerate the development of Nigeria’s indigenous IT industry and transform the nation into a knowledge-based society.
The Federal Government’s commitment to digital transformation, backed by global tech leaders like Google, reinforces Nigeria’s potential to emerge as a leading technology hub on the world stage.
