Heifer International, an NGO, has announced a $40,000 grant to empower youths and women to engage in the 2024 AYuTe Africa Challenge Nigeria, focusing on fostering innovative and technology-driven agri-centric ventures. Dr. Lekan Tobe, Interim Country Director of Heifer International, unveiled the initiative in Abuja, stressing its mission to identify, nurture, and bolster innovative agritech enterprises, particularly those led by young individuals and women. Tobe highlighted the pivotal role of youth and technology in revolutionizing agriculture and food systems across Nigeria and Africa.
The AYuTe Africa Challenge Nigeria aims to empower young agritech innovators by facilitating partnerships to enhance their visibility, growth, and productivity among smallholder farmers. Tobe urged eligible agripreneurs to apply, expressing confidence that the challenge would equip them with innovative solutions to significantly benefit smallholder farmers. He reaffirmed Heifer International’s dedication to supporting agritech innovation and youth entrepreneurship, envisioning positive transformations in the agricultural sector and the livelihoods of farmers.
Chuba Eziegwe, Communications Manager for Heifer International in Nigeria, emphasized the organization’s global support for smallholder farmers, impacting 40 million individuals to date. He stressed the importance of engaging youth in agriculture to harness their innovative potential, akin to revolutions seen in fintech and health tech. Eziegwe outlined the challenge’s provisions of grants, business mentorship, and incubation to assist young agripreneurs in scaling their ideas and ensuring food security across Africa.
Tajudeen Yahaya, CEO of Extension Africa and the 2023 challenge winner, advised applicants to prioritize clarity and simplicity in their work. He highlighted the platform’s opportunities for networking with peers and mentors, facilitating scaling within Nigeria and beyond.
Mustapha Abokede, Venture Lead at Wennovation, an implementing partner of the challenge, encouraged women’s participation to expedite agritech entrepreneurship in Nigeria. The challenge aims to amplify the endeavors of young agripreneurs and contribute to broader goals of food security and agricultural transformation in Africa.
