Microsoft has unveiled a $1 million investment initiative aimed at equipping one million Nigerians with artificial intelligence (AI) skills, marking a pivotal step toward advancing digital literacy and workforce preparedness in the country. This announcement was made during the Microsoft AI Tour in Lagos, a global event series that brings together business leaders, technical experts, and AI enthusiasts to explore AI’s transformative impact.
This investment aligns with Nigeria’s National AI Strategy and the country’s broader ambition to establish itself as a major player in the global AI landscape. With projections indicating that Nigeria’s AI market will expand at an annual rate of 27.08% between 2025 and 2030, the initiative is designed to close the digital skills gap, improve employability, and stimulate economic growth.
The training programs will be implemented in collaboration with the Nigerian government, ensuring broad accessibility to AI, digital literacy, and cybersecurity education. Ola Williams, Microsoft’s Managing Director for Nigeria and Ghana, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to empowering both individuals and organizations through AI-focused learning opportunities. She emphasized that beyond providing new skills, the initiative aims to foster innovation and propel industrial transformation.
A major aspect of this initiative is inclusivity, with a strong emphasis on providing equitable access to digital opportunities, particularly for youth and women. Microsoft’s goal is to train one million Nigerians by 2026, including business leaders and public sector officials, to enable them to leverage AI for industrial and technological advancement.
Williams stressed that this effort extends beyond personal career development—it seeks to uplift entire communities by democratizing AI education. This vision aligns with Nigeria’s broader economic agenda, which emphasizes fostering digital enterprises and preparing the workforce for the evolving job market.
Industry experts project that AI could contribute as much as $15 billion to Nigeria’s GDP by 2030 if the right skills and technologies are widely adopted. The Microsoft AI Tour in Lagos provided professionals with hands-on experience with AI tools, opportunities to engage with Microsoft’s leadership, and insights into AI’s role in business transformation and problem-solving.
As AI continues to reshape industries worldwide, Microsoft’s investment marks a significant milestone in positioning Nigeria as a leader in the digital economy, ensuring its workforce is equipped with the necessary skills to compete in an increasingly AI-driven global market.
