The Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) recently celebrated the graduation of 108 participants from the inaugural cohort of its Women and Youth Entrepreneurship Program. This initiative aims to equip women and young individuals with vital vocational skills to address Nigeria’s growing unemployment challenges.
Out of the 125 individuals who initially enrolled, 108 successfully completed the program, marking a key achievement for the NBCC. Ray Atelly, president and chairman of the NBCC council, expressed his pride during the graduation ceremony, reflecting on his longstanding commitment to empowering women and youth.
“It fills me with immense joy to empower young people, a passion I’ve nurtured for over 30 years. When I assumed the presidency of this Chamber, I was determined to make this program a reality during my tenure,” said Atelly. He acknowledged the challenges many individuals face in their pursuit of success, including limited resources and unsupportive environments, stressing the importance of ongoing assistance in these areas.
The Women and Youth Entrepreneurship Programme aligns with Atelly’s vision to help reduce unemployment in Nigeria by offering participants practical skills that promote self-reliance and entrepreneurial success.
Adenike Macaulay, CEO of Wakanow, encouraged the graduates to continuously build on their newfound knowledge, emphasizing that ongoing education is crucial for both personal and professional development. “This program is only the beginning. It’s essential to keep enhancing your skillset to establish a strong foundation for your future,” she advised.
Similarly, Ama Onyerinma, co-founder of Africa Sustainable Trade, highlighted the significance of strategic networking and remaining focused in one’s career. “Networking and cultivating strategic relationships are crucial for advancement in life. Be deliberate about your goals to lead a purposeful and exciting life,” she urged the graduates.
The success of this first cohort has sparked enthusiasm for the upcoming session, which will welcome 180 participants starting on September 13, 2024. According to the NBCC, this initiative underscores their sustained efforts to combat unemployment and foster economic empowerment for women and youth across Nigeria.
