The German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ), acting under the guidance of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), has launched an innovative initiative called develoPPP Ventures. This initiative aims to provide financial backing to emerging startups in South Africa.
develoPPP Ventures focuses specifically on supporting the growth phase of promising South African small and growing businesses (SGBs) that demonstrate potential to generate positive societal or environmental impacts alongside economic growth.
Funding allocations through develoPPP Ventures are determined through competitive rounds. Eligible startups have the opportunity to secure grants up to a maximum of EUR 100,000 (approximately US$110,000). This financial support is intended to help these enterprises scale their business models effectively.
The primary goal of develoPPP Ventures’ financial support is to elevate these startups to a stage where they become attractive to commercial investors or financial institutions for further investment. To qualify, South African SGBs must be registered entities in the country, possess market-ready products or services, and demonstrate initial market traction through at least one annual financial statement showing sales.
In addition to financial grants, selected companies will receive tailored technical assistance to address specific needs, thereby enhancing their chances of success. GIZ partners with VC4A, a global organization dedicated to building startup ecosystems, and Jozi Angels, a community-based group of angel investors, to effectively implement develoPPP Ventures in South Africa.
Applications for the inaugural develoPPP Ventures competition in South Africa are currently open until June 30.
