The Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Limited has introduced a Space-Tech Hackathon aimed at empowering young Nigerians in the Northeast, with a strong emphasis on grassroots innovation in satellite technology. Themed “Building Grassroots Innovation in Satellite Technology,” the event is scheduled to take place from February 24 to 28 in Yola, Adamawa State, marking the inaugural edition of a planned four-part regional hackathon series. The initiative is specifically designed for university students, local innovators, and young professionals from six states—Borno, Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, and Adamawa.
Participants will undergo training in Very Small Aperture Terminal (V-SAT) technology and engage in practical projects addressing real-world challenges through space-based solutions. The program will explore various applications of NIGCOMSAT’s communication satellites, alongside satellites managed by the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), and other emerging technologies to foster problem-solving and technological advancement.
According to Mrs. Jane Egerton-Idehen, the Managing Director of NIGCOMSAT Ltd, the hackathon’s winning teams will gain entry into the NIGCOMSAT Accelerator Programme 2025 cohort, where they will refine their innovations, receive mentorship, and gain guidance to transform their concepts into market-ready solutions.
The Adamawa State Government is co-hosting this initiative in partnership with NIGCOMSAT Ltd, reinforcing its commitment to promoting technological advancement within the region. The initiative is designed to increase awareness of satellite technology’s role in addressing societal challenges, stimulate innovative thinking, and contribute to economic development.
Beyond its technical components, the program aims to tackle youth unemployment by equipping participants with in-demand digital skills, nurturing entrepreneurial capabilities, and encouraging active participation in Nigeria’s expanding digital economy. As the space technology sector continues to grow, initiatives like this have the potential to create sustainable career pathways for young Africans in technology-driven industries.
As a government-owned entity under the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, NIGCOMSAT Ltd is responsible for managing Nigeria’s communication satellites and delivering telecommunications, broadcasting, broadband, and navigation services while also supporting key sectors like national security, education, and e-governance. By launching programs such as this hackathon, NIGCOMSAT aims to drive growth within the sector and strengthen Africa’s influence in the global space technology landscape.
