The African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) and The World Bank (Office of the Chief Economist for Africa Region - AFRCE) are accepting applications for the 2026/2027 AERC-World Bank Visiting Scholars Programme.
This collaborative fellowship gives African researchers an opportunity to spend 4 to 6 months at the World Bank, working alongside leading economists and accessing high-level research data to drive economic development in Africa.
Programme Objectives
- Boost economic policy research capacity across Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Strengthen global linkages between African scholars and international policy frameworks.
- Expand the policy impact of research from both AERC and the World Bank.
- Enhance scholars' skills, publications, and course materials through access to World Bank networks and economic data.
What Visiting Scholars Will Do
Selected participants will join the Office of the Chief Economist for Africa Region (DECAF) team and are expected to:
- Collaborate with peers on World Bank Regional Flagship Studies.
- Revise draft research papers for submission to the World Bank Working Paper Series and peer-reviewed journals.
- Present at least one seminar on their research during the residency.
- Contribute to ongoing World Bank analytical and research projects.
- Develop or refine university curriculum/course materials based on their research.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be an AERC researcher (including researchers from the AERC Collaborative PhD Programme - CPP).
- Have an active AERC research project at the interim/post-field stage or final research paper stage.
- Focus on a research topic aligned with the World Bank Africa Region agenda and critical to African development.
Note: Women, Francophone, and Lusophone researchers are strongly encouraged to apply.
