The African Centre for School Leadership (ACSL), in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, is officially inviting applications for Cohort II of its School Leadership Research Grants.
This initiative aims to fund high-quality, action-oriented research designed to tackle critical challenges in school leadership and elevate educational outcomes across Africa. A total of 23 African education researchers will be awarded grants to generate evidence that directly informs national and continental education policies and practices.
Key Program Details & Benefits
Selected researchers and institutions can access funding and support tailored to high-impact educational research:
- Funding: Grants up to US$35,000 available for eligible projects (including comparative action research and descriptive action research).
- Policy Impact: Support for producing evidence-based insights that directly influence African education policy and institutional practices.
- Networking: Direct exposure and engagement with an expansive network of education stakeholders, scholars, and policymakers.
Eligibility & Team Requirements
To qualify for consideration, applicants and research teams must satisfy the following criteria:

- Location & Citizenship: The Principal Investigator (PI) and research team must be African citizens residing in Africa, with research focused on African school leadership practices.
- Principal Investigator Credentials: The PI must hold a Doctorate in Education, Educational Leadership, Educational Management, or a closely related field obtained within the last 5 years.
- Team Structure: Teams must consist of 3 to 5 multidisciplinary members.
- Diversity Focus: Proposals are strongly encouraged to demonstrate diversity by including:
- Female researchers
- Young researchers (under age 35)
- Members with varying academic degree levels (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral candidates)
- Action-Research & Inclusivity: Projects must employ an action-research methodology, demonstrate active collaboration with policymakers and local practitioners, and prioritize themes like gender equality, disability inclusion, and support for rural or marginalized communities.
