The Airtel Africa Foundation has successfully disbursed ₦50 million in comprehensive scholarship funding to 100 promising undergraduate students across Nigeria's public universities.
Marking the culmination of the inaugural year of the Airtel Africa Tech Fellowship Programme, this strategic intervention targets academically exceptional yet financially constrained students pursuing critical technology disciplines. Beneficiaries, specializing in high-demand fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Software Engineering, Data Science, and Information Technology, each received an average allocation of ₦500,000. This funding is structured to provide holistic academic support, covering tuition, accommodation, living stipends, and essential hardware requirements, including laptop computers. Crucially, the Foundation has committed to sustaining this financial backing throughout the entirety of the students' academic tenures.
The initiative underscores a broader mandate to cultivate a robust ecosystem of homegrown technological talent. "We are not just funding education; we are building a pipeline of skilled innovators who will contribute meaningfully to Africa’s digital economy," stated Dr. Segun Ogunsanya, Chairman of the Airtel Africa Foundation.Echoing this strategic vision, Airtel Nigeria CEO Dinesh Balsingh highlighted the dual focus on youth empowerment and digital inclusivity. He emphasized that early-stage investment in human capital is paramount to sustaining long-term economic innovation and navigating the continent's digital transformation.
Transcending traditional financial aid, the fellowship incorporates an accelerated professional development model. Scholars will be integrated into intensive mentorship programs and career development pathways designed to seamlessly transition them from academic excellence to industry readiness.
This multi-faceted approach reaffirms the Foundation's overarching commitment to bridging the global technology talent gap, fostering digital equity, and empowering the next generation of African technological leadership.
