Applications Open for Nexa Global Climate × Health Innovation Challenge 2026

The Nexa Global Climate × Health Innovation Challenge 2026 is officially accepting applications. This global initiative funds bold, locally led innovations designed to strengthen health systems against the escalating impacts of climate change.

Co-led by Grand Challenges Canada and the Science for Africa Foundation, the Nexa initiative works alongside a global consortium of partners to invest in climate and health solutions across Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Backed by over USD 50 million in partner commitments over five years, Nexa aims to help frontline communities anticipate, adapt to, and respond to climate-driven health threats.

Available Funding Streams

Selected applicants can secure funding through one of two distinct tracks based on their project's maturity:

  • Proof of Concept: Offers up to USD 200,000 over 18–24 months to support early-stage innovations.
  • Transition to Scale: Provides between USD 250,000 and USD 2 million for proven innovations that are ready for expansion and wider implementation.

In addition to financial backing, selected innovators gain access to a global network of funders, technical support, and international visibility.

Eligibility Criteria

1. Proof of Concept

To qualify for this track, applicants must:

  • Be an officially incorporated organization (or equivalent) based in Brazil or an eligible African country.
  • Propose an early-stage innovation directly addressing climate-related health challenges.

2. Transition to Scale

To qualify for this track, applicants must:

  • Provide clear evidence that the innovation has already been successfully tested and is ready to scale.

Core Focus Areas

The initiative specifically targets solutions addressing major climate-related health risks, including extreme heat, mosquito-borne diseases, and poor air quality. Project proposals may include:

  • Climate-informed early warning and monitoring systems
  • Climate-responsive healthcare delivery models
  • Digital health technologies and community health innovations
  • Data and decision-support tools
  • Products, services, or processes that enhance health system resilience
