The application window is officially open for the 2026 Miles Morland Foundation (MMF) Writing Scholarships. Established in 2013 by founder Miles Morland following a successful career investing in African markets through Blakeney Management and Development Partners International (DPI) the foundation seeks to support emerging literary talent across the continent.
Recognizing that financial constraints often prevent talented authors from focusing fully on their craft, the MMF provides annual grants to give writers the financial freedom to complete the first draft of a full-length book.
Grant Details
- Fiction Writers: Selected scholars will receive a total grant of £18,000, distributed in monthly installments over one year.
- Non-Fiction Writers: At the foundation's discretion, authors writing non-fiction who require extensive research may have their funding extended for up to 18 months.
Eligibility & Guidelines
To apply for the scholarship, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Heritage: Applicants must have been born in Africa, or have both parents born in Africa.
- Language: All submissions and proposed books must be written in English.
- Prior Publication: Candidates must submit a published excerpt of their work (between 2,000 and 5,000 words) that has been offered for commercial sale. Verifiable proof of both publication and sale is mandatory.
Note: Submissions are evaluated solely on their literary quality. The MMF does not fund academic research, scientific studies, or niche interest projects, such as political or religious texts.
Scholar Requirements
The primary obligation of a chosen scholar is to focus on their writing. Recipients are required to submit a minimum of 10,000 new words via email every month for the duration of their scholarship. If a writer finishes their first draft ahead of schedule, the monthly payments will continue to support them through the editing and polishing phases.
