Call for Applications: Royal Academy of Engineering Africa Prize 2027

The Royal Academy of Engineering has officially opened applications for the 2027 Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation. As the continent’s largest award dedicated entirely to engineering breakthroughs, this initiative is designed to equip African innovators with the commercialization support, mentorship, and funding needed to scale local solutions to regional challenges.

What the Prize Offers

Up to 16 selected innovators will receive a comprehensive support package designed to accelerate their businesses:

  • Tailored Business Training: An intensive, eight-month business incubator program.
  • Fully-Funded Travel: Two immersive training weeks; one hosted in the United Kingdom and another in a major African hub.
  • Expert Mentorship: Direct access to technical specialists, industry mentors, and business development experts.
  • Publicity & Media Support: Bespoke communications training and press coverage to elevate your brand’s profile.
  • High-Value Networking: Direct connection to the Royal Academy’s prestigious network of international engineers and business leaders.
  • Funding Opportunities: Finalists will pitch their businesses to an expert judging panel for a chance to win up to £50,000 in prize money.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the cohort, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Location & Citizenship: The primary applicant (or team lead) must be a citizen of and currently residing in a Sub-Saharan African nation. Temporary residency abroad for educational purposes is permitted.
  • Age: All applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time of the application deadline.
  • Language: High proficiency in English is required, as the entire program and application process are conducted in English.
  • Institutional Exclusions: This program is not open to industrial research institutions or established large-scale industrial researchers.
  • Alumni Restrictions:
  • Past participants of the Africa Prize are ineligible.
  • Alumni of the Academy’s Advance program or the Leaders in Innovation Fellowship (LIF) who participated after June 2024 cannot apply.
  • Pre-June 2024 LIF alumni may apply but must explicitly demonstrate how the Africa Prize will uniquely benefit their current venture.

Selection Timeline & Process

The selection is divided into two distinct phases:

Stage 1: Technical Evaluation

Focuses on the engineering viability, originality, and feasibility of your design.
