In a strategic effort to reposition Nigeria’s livestock sector, modernise rural agriculture, and enhance national food security, the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has launched a major empowerment initiative targeting women and young farmers in Jigawa State. Organized in collaboration with Meteorite Logistics Ltd., the intervention program brought together 100 selected beneficiaries comprising 52 women and 48 youths drawn from across the North-West, North-East, and North-Central geopolitical zones for an official distribution ceremony held at Kilometer 5, Shuwarin Cattle Market in Dutse, Jigawa State.
During the event, the Ministry distributed 100 high-quality bullocks, heifers, and ancillary livestock production inputs designed to help recipients establish sustainable agricultural businesses, expand their herds, and boost household incomes. Representing the Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, the Director of Livestock Extension and Business Development emphasized that providing breeding stock directly to rural producers is part of the Federal Government's broader strategy under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He noted that the initiative serves as more than temporary assistance; it is a long-term economic investment intended to encourage entrepreneurship, generate rural employment, and integrate women and young people directly into the national livestock value chain. Ministry officials and technical experts from Meteorite Logistics Ltd. remained on-site throughout the exercise to offer practical guidance on sustainable animal husbandry, feeding, breeding techniques, and healthcare practices to ensure the long-term success of the livestock assets.

The intervention received strong praise from local agricultural leaders and community representatives. Dr. Maryam Rabiu Miko, the Jigawa State Coordinator for the Association of Women in Agriculture and Rural Farmers of Nigeria (AWARFAN), commended the government's support, highlighting that the heifers received would provide women with the foundational assets needed to launch viable livestock enterprises. Speaking on behalf of his wife, Hannatu Musa, beneficiary Umar Usman expressed gratitude for the prioritization of vulnerable households, emphasizing the program's immediate impact on household economic stability. Additionally, Ahmed Abubakar, representing the Jigawa State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), noted that the targeted distribution would strengthen local livestock production and support local pastoral communities. Concluding the event, Mr. Olorunfemi of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development urged the beneficiaries to view the animals not as disposable gifts, but as foundational seeds for wealth creation, job generation, and a stronger livestock economy across Nigeria.
