The Lagos State Government has taken a major step forward in its environmental sustainability agenda with the official launch of the Lagos State Greenhouse Gas Registry, establishing itself as the first sub-national government in Nigeria to create a comprehensive emissions tracking system. Launched at an event in Alausa, Ikeja, the new platform is designed to serve as a centralized hub for gathering, monitoring, verifying, and managing greenhouse gas emissions data across key economic sectors throughout the state. By supplying credible, data-driven insights, the initiative aims to strengthen overall climate governance, enhance environmental accountability, and accelerate Lagos’ transition toward a resilient, low-carbon economy.
Beyond tracking emissions, the registry is expected to bolster evidence-based policymaking and help the state meet both national and international climate commitments, including goals outlined under the Paris Agreement. During the launch ceremony which drew key stakeholders including the Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, state executive council members, representatives from the Federal Ministry of Environment, TPHG Technologies, as well as leaders from the private sector, diplomatic corps, and civil society officials highlighted that robust data collection will build institutional capacity while offering businesses and investors the clarity needed to guide sustainable, green investments. Ultimately, this initiative positions Lagos alongside leading global cities utilizing structured climate metrics to improve urban resilience, attract sustainable funding, and foster long-term environmental health.
