MTN Nigeria Doubles Down With ₦1.63tn CAPEX Boost

In a disclosure during MTN Nigeria’s 25th-anniversary celebration at its Lagos headquarters, Chief Financial Officer Modupe Kadri revealed that the telecommunications giant has poured ₦1.63 trillion into capital expenditures (CAPEX) over the past 18 months. Following a regulatory tariff adjustment prior to January 2025, the company committed over a trillion naira specifically toward capital investments while paying more than ₦620 billion in taxes and levies, fulfilling its regular regulatory license obligations. Kadri highlighted that investors on the Nigerian Exchange have seen significant capital gains since the firm's historic listing in May 2019 at ₦90 per share, with stock prices reaching ₦845 per share. Looking beyond the company's quarter-century history which began with its first test call in Lagos back in May 2001 Kadri emphasized that the focus remains firmly on future tech transformations such as 5G, artificial intelligence, and emerging digital innovations.

This ongoing massive infrastructure investment directly supports MTN Nigeria’s expanding network scale, which currently serves over 92 million subscribers. According to Nasiru Hayatu, General Manager of Access Planning and Optimisation, managing such a massive subscriber base relies heavily on continuous, step-by-step annual network optimization and predictive forecasting tools. Alongside network enhancements, Chief Marketing Officer Onyinye Ikenna-Emeka clarified that MTN has no plans to enter direct mobile device sales, choosing instead to expand partnerships with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) across the country to make modern technology more accessible to Nigerians. Meanwhile, the company is continuing to broaden its digital ecosystem and consumer touchpoints, with Chief Digital Officer Aisha Umar-Mumuni highlighting ongoing family entertainment initiatives like the Next Afrobest Star, as executive leadership reflected on the telco's deep-rooted journey in Nigeria's mobile landscape.
