The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is considering a proposal that could require students seeking mobilization for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme to present proof of payment of a new ₦200 annual dues receipt.
The proposal was disclosed by NANS National President, Akinteye Babatunde, in recent social media posts and videos where he outlined the financial hurdles facing the student body. According to Babatunde, the move stems from the association’s desire to achieve financial independence rather than continuing to rely on individual Student Union Governments (SUGs) or university managements, which he claimed frequently withhold or fail to remit union capitation fees.
To address these funding shortages and bypass institutional bottlenecks, NANS plans to establish a direct collection model from students. Babatunde emphasized that the annual ₦200 fee is intentionally set low so as not to impose an unreasonable financial burden on students while giving the organization the resources necessary to operate independently, respond to student emergencies, and advocate effectively on campuses nationwide.

While Babatunde indicated that NANS intends to collaborate with the NYSC to make the payment receipt an official requirement for camp mobilization, no formal implementation details have been finalized. Furthermore, the NYSC management has not yet issued an official statement or approval establishing the proposed fee as a mandatory condition for mobilization.
