Ogun State Empowers Community Leaders with Digital Skills, Featuring Edfrica Director Mr. Mathew Oguntayo

As digital technology rapidly transforms how the world connects and works, many community leaders risk being left behind simply because they lack hands-on experience with basic applications.

To bridge this gap, the Ogun State Government, has launched a digital literacy initiative targeting community leaders across all Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Ogun State, a session facilitated by Mr. Mathew Oguntayo the Director, Technology and Business Development, Edfrica. The training program equips local leaders with practical skills to integrate modern digital tools into their day-to-day governance and record-keeping.

Key Skills & Tools Covered

The hands-on sessions focus on simple, high-impact digital applications designed to modernize community administration:

•  Google Drive & Cloud Storage: Teaching leaders how to securely save and back up photos, documents, and historical records of community projects ensuring files are preserved safely in the cloud rather than relying on paper, which can easily be lost or damaged.

• AI Assistance: Demonstrating how artificial intelligence can automatically transcribe, record, and summarize meeting proceedings to save time and reduce manual note-taking.

• Google Sheets for Financial Clarity: Equipping community treasurers with basic digital accounting skills to track budgets, income, and expenditures accurately.

• Google Meet & Inclusive Access: Showing how online meeting platforms can bridge physical gaps, enabling community members especially persons with disabilities (PWDs) to participate fully in governance without needing to travel.

• Social Media Visibility: Training leaders on how to showcase ongoing community development projects on platforms like Facebook to raise awareness and foster local pride.

Why Digital Documentation Matters

The overarching goal of this initiative goes far beyond basic tech skills; it is about empowerment, transparency, and sustainable growth.

Historically, reliance on physical notebooks and paper records has made community data vulnerable to loss, damage, or misplacement. By transitioning to cloud-based systems, leaders ensure that:

1. Grant & Funding Readiness: Having organized, verifiable digital records makes communities immediately eligible and competitive when applying for government or NGO development grants.

2. Seamless Historical Reference: Past meeting minutes, decision logs, and project histories remain accessible anytime, anywhere.

3. Inclusive Governance: Every voice can be heard regardless of physical mobility constraints, building a more connected and equitable community.

Through this collaborative effort, the Ogun State Government are ensuring that local grassroots leaders are not just keeping up with technology  they are using it to build stronger, more organized, and future-ready communities.
