The Smart Africa Secretariat and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (UN FAO) have officially launched the 3rd Edition of the Innovate Africa Challenge. Focused on the theme “From Ideation to Deployment,” the 2026 competition is structured to transition high-potential Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies past early-stage piloting into full, field-validated deployment across African agricultural systems.
Why the Challenge Matters
While digital agriculture and AI present huge opportunities to improve productivity and climate resilience across Africa, many promising technologies remain stuck in pilot phases. They are rarely integrated into national policy frameworks, extension networks, or large-scale farming environments.
The 3rd Edition addresses this bottleneck by selecting one proven AI-driven solution and supporting its live, field-level deployment within a Smart Africa Member State.
Focus Areas & Scope
Proposals must leverage AI to solve pressing challenges in climate resilience and smallholder farming. Submissions should address one or more of the following five domains:
- Precision Agriculture & Input Optimization: AI-driven models to optimize seed, fertilizer, and resource usage.
- Crop Yield Prediction & Forecasting: Data models enabling proactive planning for farmers, buyers, and government bodies.
- Pest & Disease Surveillance: Automated early warning systems, early detection tools, and rapid alert notifications.
- Climate Risk Modeling: Decision-support tools helping smallholders adapt to shifting weather patterns and extreme events.
- Water & Natural Resource Optimization: AI tools for precision irrigation, soil management, and resource conservation.
Winner Deployment & Implementation Package
Unlike typical pitch competitions that offer cash prizes without operational support, the winning innovation receives direct, multi-agency deployment assistance:
- In-Country Implementation: Field deployment inside a designated Smart Africa Member State.
- Government Partnerships: Direct integration with national ministries responsible for Agriculture, ICT, and Innovation.
- Technical Guidance: Hands-on technical validation and alignment with national extension services by UN FAO technical teams and country offices.
- Policy & Ecosystem Evidence: Generated findings will be used to establish scalable models and inform future national digital agricultural policies.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered:
- Geographic Scope: Open exclusively to startups and innovators operating in Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, or Uganda.
- Maturity (TRL): Solutions must have a working prototype or validated product beyond early conceptual stages.
- Financial & Operational Viability: A clear pathway to financial sustainability, scalability, and long-term ecosystem impact.
