The South-West Development Commission (SWDC) has unveiled an ₦80 billion rural development initiative aimed at improving infrastructure and strengthening economic activities across communities in South-West Nigeria.
The programme, called the Transformed Communities Programme (TransComs), will be formally presented at a stakeholder roundtable on May 5 and 6, 2026, in Ibadan. The event will include government agencies, private sector players, financial institutions, and development experts.
TransComs is designed to address long-standing rural development gaps by combining key sectors such as agriculture, energy, healthcare, digital access, agro-processing, and microfinance into one coordinated framework. The initiative is being developed with strategic input from development expert Oyebanji Oyelaran-Oyeyinka.
A major feature of the programme is the creation of clustered rural economic hubs, where neighbouring communities are grouped into self-sustaining units to attract investment and improve local production. Pilot projects are already underway in selected communities in Oyo State, including Fapote, Ogbomoso, and Ibapara.

SWDC plans to roll out 12 operational hubs by 2026 and expand to 137 units across six South-West states by 2030.
The initiative is expected to open new opportunities for MSMEs by improving infrastructure, expanding access to finance, and strengthening rural value chains.
