The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has opened applications for its Pan-African MineTech Startup Incubation Programme. Hosted at the new MineTech Hub in Zambia, the initiative supports African startups developing innovative tech to make mining safer, cleaner, and more transparent. Selected founders will receive structured incubation, mentorship, and investment-readiness support through the timbuktoo network starting in July 2026.

The UNDP Timbuktoo Pan-African MineTech Startup Incubation Programme 2026

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has officially launched applications for its Pan-African MineTech Startup Incubation Programme. This initiative welcomes African MineTech startups to join the newly established MineTech Hub in Zambia, with the inaugural cohort kicking off in July 2026.

Hub Mission & Focus

The Timbuktoo MineTech Hub is dedicated to discovering and scaling technology that makes African mining safer, cleaner, and more transparent. The programme targets innovations across the entire mining value chain, specifically focusing on:

  • Safety & Protection: Mine safety technology and workforce protection tools (including gear for artisanal miners).
  • Formalization: Mechanization and formalization systems for Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM).
  • Traceability: Mineral tracking, resource governance, and supply chain transparency.
  • Environment: Environmental monitoring, climate resilience tools, and geotechnical risk management (dewatering, ventilation).
  • Clean Tech: Lithium-ion battery design and green value chain development.
  • Operations & Access: Remote/autonomous mining operations, alongside trade and financial inclusion for mining-linked businesses.

What Selected Startups Receive

Startups entering the cohort will gain access to a robust support network designed to prepare them for scaling and investment:

  • Structured Incubation: Hands-on acceleration from accredited incubators within the timbuktoo network.
  • The Timbuktoo Digital Platform: Seamless connection to mentors, investors, and fellow founders across Africa.
  • Advanced Guidance: Access to specialized learning resources and AI-powered guidance tailored for investment readiness.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the programme, your startup must meet the following requirements:

Location: Your startup must be based in Africa or actively building solutions tailored for African mining markets.

Product Stage: You must possess a working prototype or a Minimum Viable Product (MVP).

Timeline & Deadlines

  • Application Deadline: Ongoing (Rolling basis).
  • Cohort Cycles: New cohorts are admitted every three months.

Note: Applications from women-led, youth-led, and founders operating within underserved or mining-affected communities are highly encouraged.
