UN Women has officially opened applications for its Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) Internship based at the Regional Office for East and Southern Africa (ESARO) in Nairobi, Kenya. This full-time, six-month program gives students and recent graduates hands-on experience in gender economics, development policy, and women’s economic autonomy across the region.
Focus Areas for 2026/2027:
Operating within complex economic contexts affected by climate challenges, displacement, and financial shocks, the WEE programme focuses on three core priorities:
- Climate-Resilient Agriculture & Just Transition: Advancing opportunities in blue and green economies.
- The Care Economy: Addressing policies and frameworks surrounding caregiving and domestic labor.
- Entrepreneurship & Decent Work: Promoting women's social enterprises, innovation, and active participation in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Responsibilities:
Working under the guidance of a Policy Specialist, the intern will support tasks across research, communications, and administrative functions, including:
- Conducting gender economics research and drafting position papers or talking points.
- Supporting programme implementation and operations.
- Developing content for social media, website articles, and outreach efforts.
- Assisting with day-to-day administrative duties and stakeholder engagement.
Eligibility Requirements:
To be considered, candidates must meet one of the following academic criteria at the time of application:

- Postgraduate Students: Currently enrolled in a Master's or higher degree program in feminist economics, gender economics, or a related discipline.
- Undergraduate Students: Enrolled in the final academic year of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
- National Service: Enrolled in a mandatory national service program where an internship can fulfill part of the service.
- Recent Graduates: Completed a qualifying university degree and able to start within two years of graduation.
Key Competencies:
- Academic grounding in feminist/gender economics and African development issues.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English (knowledge of another UN language is a plus).
- Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity regarding gender issues.
- Creative problem-solving abilities and a collaborative mindset.
