TBD, a division of Block, has introduced the TBD Hackathon in partnership with the Africa Bitcoin Conference. This competition is designed to drive innovation and technological progress in payment systems across Africa using the tbDEX open-source protocol. The hackathon will take place from July 31 to September 15, 2024, with the final event scheduled for December 9-11, 2024, in Nairobi, Kenya, at the Africa Bitcoin Conference.
The hackathon aims to tap into the potential of African developers and entrepreneurs by addressing key issues in payment systems, including limited access to banking services, high transaction fees, and inefficient cross-border payments. Participants are challenged to create a payment application that utilizes tbDEX to connect users with wallet providers and financial institutions, offering better exchange rates and lower fees.
Interested developers can register here and can form teams of up to two people. They will use the tbDEX SDK and have access to a sandbox with example Participating Financial Institutions (PFIs) for testing.
Six finalist teams will be flown to Nairobi to pitch their projects at the Africa Bitcoin Conference. Prizes for the top three projects are $15,000 in BTC for first place, $10,000 in BTC for second place, and $5,000 in BTC for third place.
Angie Jones, Global VP of Developer Relations for TBD, encourages developers and innovators from across Africa to participate, stating, “Whether you’re an experienced professional or a passionate newcomer, the TBD Hackathon offers an excellent platform to create the next generation of financial tools for the continent.”
