Application Deadline: 28th February 2025
UNDEF supports projects that strengthen the voice of civil society, promote human rights, and encourage the participation of all groups in democratic processes. UNDEF projects are two years long. Applicants can request a grant of a minimum of 100,000 US dollars and a maximum of 200,000 US dollars. The large majority of UNDEF funds go to local civil society organizations. In this way, UNDEF plays a distinct role in complementing the UN’s other work — the work with Governments — to strengthen democratic governance around the world.
Since 2006, UNDEF has supported more than 890 projects in over 120 countries at a total amount of over US $211 million. Proposals are subject to a highly rigorous selection process, with fewer than two per cent of proposals chosen for funding.
Projects fall under one or more of six areas
This year UNDEF particularly welcomes projects that promote civic engagement for Climate action.
UNDEF always encourages proposals advancing Gender equality and Youth empowerment.
UNDEF accepts on-line proposals during an annual window, which will open from the first of February 2025 to 28th February 2025. There will be no extension to the deadline (11:59pm Eastern Time on 28th February 2025). Those who plan to apply are strongly encouraged to visit the UNDEF website as soon as possible to familiarize themselves with what is required.
