Nigerian Stock Market Opens August Up 0.18% with N289bn Gain

August got off to a glowing start on the Nigerian Stock Exchange as a wave of fresh buying interest propelled the market to a N289bn gain on its very first trading day of the month. Pushing past recent headwinds, the All-Share Index picked up 446.85 points, a solid 0.18 per cent rally to close at 245,730.53 points, while total market capitalization expanded to N158.614tn. Heavyweight and mid-tier names across key sectors, including Vitafoam Nigeria, MTN Nigeria Communications, NASCON Allied Industries, First Holdco, and HBM Nigeria, did much of the heavy lifting to anchor the day's positive movement.

The sudden turnaround marked a welcome reprieve for market participants following a brief spell of weakness. An analyst at Apt Securities and Funds Limited pointed to renewed dip-buying as the core catalyst behind the resurgence, noting that "the positive close reflects improved investor confidence following two consecutive sessions of losses, as bargain-hunting activities outweighed selling pressure."

Yet, beneath the index’s headline gain lay a more divided market sentiment. Downward pressure remained visible across broader equities, resulting in a negative market breadth where 38 decliners comfortably outnumbered 24 advancers. Driving the day's momentum on the upside were Eterna and Caverton Offshore Support Group, both hitting the maximum daily cap with a 10 per cent surge to finish at N36.30 and N5.50 per share, respectively. Omatek Ventures also enjoyed strong demand, climbing 9.88 per cent to N1.78, while AVA Capital rallied 9.70 per cent to N9.05 and Vitafoam Nigeria tacked on 7.90 per cent to settle at N194.00.

Conversely, profit-taking and sell-offs took a heavy toll on several tickers across the board. Ecobank Transnational Incorporated led the downturn, tumbling 9.95 per cent to N80.10 per share. Cadbury Nigeria wasn't far behind, retreating 9.92 per cent to N58.10, while Thomas Wyatt Nigeria gave up 9.82 per cent to land at N3.95. The sell-side pressure extended into the financial and resources spaces as well, dragging Wapic Insurance down by 9.80 per cent to N2.30 and Critical Minerals Financing Corporation down 9.79 per cent to N3.50.

Trading floor turnover quieted down slightly compared to prior sessions, with overall volume dipping by 2.1 per cent to 923.01 million units valued at N37.85bn across 72,544 deals. Access Holdings emerged as the undisputed volume driver of the day, with investors trading 166.642 million of its shares worth N4.416bn. Honeywell Flour Mills recorded substantial interest with 93.548 million shares changing hands for N1.644bn, while Sterling Financial Holdings Company logged 57.079 million shares worth N455.396m. Rounding out the top traded stocks were Universal Insurance, which saw 51.824 million shares cross the board for N45.773m, and Chams Holding Company with 33.788 million shares valued at N152.471m.
